“Do not be deceived: “Bad company ruins good morals.””
1 Corinthians 15:33
In theory, I love party planning and having people over. In reality, party planning is stressful and my Type A, OCD personality worries about spills and the like when people are over.
So far I have planned (I would say successfully) Jujubean’s first and second birthdays and Bugaboo’s first birthday with the help of Pinterest. Pinterest really is a lifesaver for me because I am not crafty or creative.
Jujubean’s second birthday was Elmo-themed and I created my very own secret board full of ideas for her party. I pulled together all the ideas I liked and created the perfect Elmo-themed birthday party! It was a hit and I feel like everything coordinated and looked like a “sophisticated Elmo” party. The invitations, party favors, water bottle labels, etc all matched each other and I was so proud! I even ordered Jujubean a dress off Etsy that went with the theme!!!! BAM!!
Bugaboo turned one last month and I figured I did so well with Jujubean, that I would be able to do the same for Bugaboo. I planned the perfect “Winter ONE-derland”. Once again I created a secret board and pulled together all the ideas I loved to create a great first birthday for my baby! I had coordinating invites, food signs, water bottle labels; the works!
These birthday parties were hosted by myself at MY house. Now I love having people over (in theory), but I don’t love the mess that gets left behind when everyone leaves! At Bugaboo’s first birthday we easily had 50 people at the house! (I’m a firm believer that you only turn one once so you have to go all out for it). After the circus departed the house, there were dirty dishes piled in the sink and on the counters. There was leftover food and drink that had to be put up, thrown out or stuffed in the fridge somehow! It was a mess and I was exhausted from playing host, so cleaning was the last thing I wanted to do. It was then and there that I made my decision.
I have decided that I will no longer plan my children’s birthday parties nor will I have them at my house. I want to enjoy the party without having to worry about playing host, wondering if there is enough food and the aftermath. We have decided that we are having Jujubean’s third birthday party where she takes gymnastics. After speaking with them about parties, they informed me that they do the set-up, clean-up and structure activities for the kids. (During this conversation, imagine the heavens opening up and angels singing). I was fresh off of Bugaboo’s party (which the house still hasn’t recovered from a month later) and the thought of not having to clean house, set-up a party or clean up the mess was music to my ears. SAY NO MORE! Where do I sign up????
I am already feeling less stressed because I just need to supply some snack food and the cake! (Which reminds me, I need to pick out a cake). Now I can actually socialize with friends and family while the kids are entertained and having fun!
Another decision I have made is to do away with party favors. I don’t remember getting goody bags when I was younger and went to SOMEONE ELSE’S birthday party, but that is another post for another day!
Let me know your thoughts! Any tips for less stressful party planning?
